Overview
Unlike its neighbor to the south, New Zealand’s North Island is more densely populated and hosts several cities, thriving with delicious restaurants, rich Maori culture, and a lively art scene. In addition to city flare, the North Island also offers fantastic outdoor recreation. Whether you’re looking to learn to surf at one of the many beautiful beaches or stroll along a lush forest trail, adventure awaits around every bend.
Our trip took place in early November, but this itinerary is suitable for spring, summer, and fall travel (October through April). Our lodging was based around staying in our rented camper van, Bob, but there are also plenty of other lodging accommodations at the different stops on our route. We only stayed for a week because we extended this trip to the South Island, but if (more like when!) we return to the North Island, we plan to expand on this itinerary. There are a lifetime of activities to be experienced in New Zealand!
North Island Travel Tips
When to Visit
We opted to travel in November since it’s a transitional time in Montana—too cold for outdoor activities but not snowy enough for skiing—and it aligned perfectly with spring on the North Island. The landscape was vibrant, with sunny beaches, green rolling hills, and baby lambs galore! While the island’s volcanic peaks still had traces of snow, October through April is an ideal time to visit before cooler, rainier weather sets in. Temperatures in spring and fall range from 50-70 F/10-20 C, with summer highs in the 80s (26+ C). Be sure to check local forecasts, as rainfall varies across regions.
What to Bring
When packing for a place like New Zealand, layers are your best friend! You’ll be glad to have options for the various landscapes and temperatures you may encounter and make sure to include a quality rain jacket to stay dry while hiking or exploring in wet weather. For footwear, consider hiking boots for rugged terrain, sturdy sandals for more relaxed walks, and sneakers for general use. Since you’ll likely be swimming at beaches or relaxing in hot springs, pack a swimsuit, quick-dry towel, water shoes, and sunscreen. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars to capture the breathtaking landscapes and spot New Zealand’s unique birdlife.
Places To Stay & How to Get Around
For our lodging and transportation, we rented a camper van to combine the two. With many rental companies available, it made sense to have our amenities with us for our short but extensive travels, allowing us to sleep whenever we wanted. The camper van also offered the freedom to camp spontaneously in unexpected places. New Zealand has a well-maintained network of campsites, making camping safe and comfortable. If camping isn’t for you, no worries! Every stop on this itinerary offers hotels and private home rentals.
7-Day North Island Itinerary
DAY 1 & 2: EXPLORE AUCKLAND

Flying into Auckland, New Zealand’s biggest city, I was immediately struck by its vibrant mix of urban life and natural beauty. With two days to explore, my husband and I started at the Auckland Museum to learn more about the country’s Māori heritage and history. From there, we wandered the city’s urban trails, stopping at local restaurants to sample some incredible cuisine. We were glad to have planned two days in Aukland for both the time to explore and also the time to adjust to the time change before we began driving–on the opposite side of the road, no less! Unfortunately, on this trip, we didn’t visit the top of the Sky Tower, the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere, but it’s on the list for our next New Zealand adventure!
On our second day, we picked up our van, Bob, which we rented from a local Kiwi. Renting from a private owner gave us personal touches and local insights, plus the convenience of being able to contact him for help or recommendations. While we enjoyed this option, New Zealand also has plenty of camper van rental companies and a wide variety of lodging accommodations!
DAY 3: HIT THE BEACH IN RAGLAN

After leaving Auckland, we took a scenic two-hour drive to the laid-back surf town of Raglan. Once we arrived, we headed straight to Ngarunui Beach, a stunning stretch of black sand perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply relaxing by the waves. After spending the afternoon soaking up the sun and watching surfers ride the famous breaks, we explored the charming town of Raglan, filled with health-conscious cafés and boutique shops. As the sun set, we enjoyed a fresh seafood dinner before settling in for the night at a cozy campground overlooking the beach, ready for another day of adventure.
DAY 4: VISIT MIDDLE EARTH

Leaving Raglan, we drove through the picturesque countryside to Hobbiton, passing rolling green hills and fields dotted with lambs along the way. The pastoral landscape felt like stepping into a fairytale, perfectly setting the mood for our visit to the famous movie set. Once we arrived, we spent the day exploring the charming hobbit holes, gardens, and the Green Dragon Inn, where we enjoyed a drink. After a magical day, we opted for a countryside stay tucked into the countryside, where we could continue to enjoy the serene rural atmosphere and fresh air before heading to our next stop.
DAY 5: HOT SPRINGS & HIKES IN ROTORUA
After leaving the rolling hills of Hobbiton, we made our way to the dense forests and geothermal springs surrounding Rotorua. The highlight of this leg of our trip was Kerosene Creek. Surrounded by a lush rainforest, this unique hot spring offered not only a pool to soak in but a whole creek and waterfall heated by geothermal energy! Knowing the springs hold deep significance in Māori culture, as they’re believed to be infused with the earth’s life force, made the experience even more special. After enjoying the springs, we spent the day hiking near Rotorua, in the Whakarewarewa Forest, surrounded by towering redwoods, vibrant ferns, and native plants creating an otherworldly atmosphere. We could feel that we were walking through a place of deep spiritual and natural power, immersed in the history and traditions of the land.
DAY 6 & 7: WANDER THROUGH WELLINGTON

After leaving Rotorua, we set out on the six-hour drive to Wellington, arriving in New Zealand’s capital for a two-day stay before catching the ferry to the South Island. As the country’s foodie city, Wellington offered an array of incredible restaurants, and we indulged in fresh seafood and local specialties. We spent our days exploring both nature and culture, hiking the scenic Eastern and Southern Walkways, which provided breathtaking views of the harbor and surrounding hills. We also visited the Te Papa Museum, where interactive exhibits gave us a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s history and culture. After seven days of exploring the New Zealand North Island region, I was ready for the next leg of our journey south!
From stunning beaches to vibrant cities, it’s easy to immerse yourself in the North Island way of life. We are eager to return to New Zealand’s North Island after experiencing its culture, food, and natural beauty.
